How to Buy an Oversized T-Shirt in India That Actually Lasts
Most oversized t-shirts sold online in India look identical in photographs. The difference shows up after a month of wear: one keeps its shape, the other sags at the neck and curls at the hem. Four things decide which one you bought.
1. GSM is the single most useful number
GSM means grams per square metre — the weight of the fabric. It is the closest thing to an objective quality signal a listing will give you, and it is why brands put it in their product titles.
- 140–160 GSM — thin, common on fast-fashion tees. Fine for layering, but often slightly sheer and quick to lose shape.
- 180 GSM — the sensible everyday weight for a regular-fit tee. Light enough for Indian summers, substantial enough to hold a straight cut. This is what we use on our regular-fit range.
- 220–240 GSM — heavyweight. This is what an oversized tee needs: the extra weight is what makes the fabric fall straight from the shoulder instead of clinging. Our oversized range is 220 GSM.
- 280 GSM and above — very heavy. Great structure, but genuinely warm for most of the year in most of India.
If a product page does not mention GSM at all, that absence is usually the answer.
2. A real drop shoulder is a pattern, not a bigger size
A true oversized tee is cut on its own pattern: the shoulder seam sits down the upper arm, the body is wider, and the length is extended so the hem still falls below the waistband on a wider body. A cheap "oversized" tee is often just a regular pattern graded up two sizes, which gives you a baggy chest and a shoulder seam in the wrong place.
The tell is the size chart. If shoulder width grows proportionally with chest across every size, it is a scaled-up regular tee. A real oversized chart shows a deliberately dropped shoulder measurement relative to the chest.
3. The print method decides how long the design survives
Prints fail before fabric does. The two you will meet most often online:
- Screen print — ink pushed through a mesh, cured with heat. Durable and vivid, best for bold designs with a limited palette.
- DTF / DTG — printed digitally onto the fabric or onto film and pressed. Handles photographic detail and gradients that screen printing cannot.
Either lasts if it is cured properly. The failure you want to avoid is a print that feels like a thick plastic sheet sitting on top of the fabric — that is the one that cracks along fold lines. Wash printed tees inside out and skip the dryer, and a good print outlives the shirt.
4. Ask about shrinkage before you size up
Untreated cotton shrinks, mostly in length, mostly in the first two washes. Bio-washed or pre-shrunk fabric has already been through that. If a brand does not say, assume some length loss and do not buy a tee that is only just long enough.
So what size should you take?
For an oversized tee cut on a proper pattern, take your usual size for the relaxed look the design intends. Size down one if you want it closer to the body; size up only if you want genuinely dramatic volume. Check the actual chest and length measurements against a t-shirt you already own and like — that comparison beats any size label.
A quick checklist
- GSM stated, and 200+ for an oversized fit
- Size chart with separate shoulder, chest and length measurements
- 100% cotton, or a stated blend with a reason for it
- A named print method
- A returns window long enough to actually try the thing on
Every UK 17 product page lists the fabric, the fit and a full size chart, and unworn items can be returned within 7 days of delivery. Cash on delivery is available across India if you would rather see the tee before you pay for it.
